of the Retreat meetings of the

Retreat #206 Minutes - Swan Island, ME

Northern Retreat of the New England chapter of BSOW
30 May 2012

The meeting was called to order by Bro. Abbot John MacDuffie at 1:15 P.M.

In attendance were Srs. Linda Kimball and Janice Chilek, Bros. John MacDuffie, Richard Waddell, Charles Erb, Jeffrey Lewis, and David Andrews.

The Minutes of the 2011 Annual Meeting of this BSOW chapter were read by Bro. David Andrews and APPROVED.

Retreat Director, Sr. Linda Kimball, chose not to exercise the option to move lunch one half hour later to 12:30 P.M. (to avoid interference with the time of silence.)  Lunch preparation activity offered no distraction to the quiet at this retreat.

Bro. John MacDuffie offered the following retreat financial report:
Receipts from retreat fee            $875
Rental of camp            ($482)
Balance            $393
Groceries            $350
Leaving $43 for any other expenses.

Minutes of the chapter meeting at the Irons Homestead were read by Sr. Linda Kimball.

The following topics were raised as a result of this reading:
“Safe Serve” food preparation was discussed.  No action taken at this time. We await information to be gathered by Sr. Jennifer Geary as to whether Maine is affected by this RI and MA program, and whether in fact its regs even apply to a group preparing food for its own members in a non-public setting.
It was requested that the Retreat Director be notified by a Bro. or Sr. prior to their leaving the property for a walk or water activity.
Noting that numbers attending retreats are dwindling, members were encouraged to “market” BSOW to increase membership.  Inviting prospective new members is encouraged.

After discussion, Bro. Waddell moved and Bro. Erb seconded that the 2013 retreat be held May 20 through 24.  It was APPROVED.   We were reminded to arrive in plenty of time to catch the usual 2:15 P.M. ferry.

It was APPROVED by consensus that there be silence in the evening following Communion.  It will begin when the Communion candelabra is extinguished or at 10:00 P.M., whichever comes first, and will continue to the Rising Bell at 7:00 A.M.

It was APPROVED by consensus that Communion follow closely on the evening reading rather than wait until 9:00 P.M.

Thanks were recorded by ACCLAMATION for the excellent cuisine provided at this retreat by Retreat Director Sr. Linda Kimball and Associate RD David Andrews. Cuisine flexibility, more fresh foods, and foods brought from home were noted with approval.

This acclamation encouraged Sr. Linda and Bro. David to offer their services again next year as Retreat Director and Associate Retreat Director.  APPROVED by further acclamation.

It was APPROVED by consensus that left-over food be made available to Bro. Charles Erb to be used for the Game Loft program for teens in Belfast.  (Unopened food will go with Sr. Linda.)

The meeting was declared adjourned at 1:46 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
Bro. Richard Waddell, Jr., Annual Meeting Scribe
